Our ranch was homesteaded in 1862 by the Jameson Brothers. In 1902 it changed hands and then in 1925, it was purchased by Paul's grandfather, Fred Wittig. In the early years he had several milk cows, as well as beef cows, and provided milk, cream, beef, eggs and ice to the townspeople of Mansfield and to the summer harvest crews. Farming was limited to raising meadow hay for the livestock.

In 1940, grain farming was added, with oats, barley, and wheat supplementing the beef income. In the early 80's, irrigation was expanded, until today our crops include irrigated alfalfa and wheat, and dryland wheat, along with cattle and horses. Paul and Heidi's two sons, Travis and Dusty are the fourth generation of Wittigs to live and work on this ranch. Charlie and Charmin, our Percheron draft horse team, are used to feed the cattle in the winter.

In the early days of the ranch, our cow herd consisted of mostly milking shorthorns, a breed that was used for both beef and milk. Now our herd is a cross of Angus, Hereford, and Simmental breeds and they are crossed on Angus bulls.

Every spring in late April, we have our round-up and branding. Old friends and new come from all over to ride and be part of a dying tradition. The cows and calves are rounded up from a 5500 acre pasture, driven about 8 miles and are brought to the ranch. The next three days are spent branding and vaccinating the calves, then sorting the pairs and driving them back to their pastures. Every fall, the calves are weaned and then a jackpot cutting is held at the ranch. Cutters come to enjoy the beautiful scenery, good cattle and ranch hospitality. As one cutter said, "This is the prettiest place on Earth!"
